The Shore’s Greatest Stretch Rides On

Thanks to some last minute negotiations, the historic Monmouth Park Racetrack is set for another great season – and more through 2015.

Opening day 2011 was May 14. Ironically, it now falls to an Atlantic City casino owner to save this Jersey Shore jewel. Here’s wishing him all good luck.

Morris Bailey, a Brooklyn real estate developer, was recently awarded a 5-year operating lease by the state on the track. Himself a native of AC, Bailey also has a home in Deal. Once an owner of more than 50 Burger King franchises around NJ, Bailey bought Resorts Atlantic City (AC’s first casino) for $35 million in 2010.

This year Monmouth will host 71 racing days and mostly run Fridays to Sundays. The $1 million Haskell Invitational, set for July 31, once again heads the meet. Other highlights on the stakes calendar include the $750,000 Grade 1 United Nations Stakes on July 2, the $250,000 Grade 2 Molly Pitcher Stakes on Aug. 28 and the $250,000 Grade 3 Iselin Stakes on Aug. 20.  In total, the announced stakes schedule includes 22 races worth nearly $5 million.

A Jersey Shore Day-Trip Must

If you’re a horse lover, and even if’ you’re not, a day at Monmouth Park is a most enjoyable experience. The Oceanport track boosts beautiful surroundings, suitable refreshments, and a solid race card. Group rates (family or business parties can be a blast) are also available.

Post time is 12:50 p.m. but you can come an hour earlier and listen to pro handicapper forecasts. One sage local handicapper advises to “discover The Racing Form and focus bets on a few races.”

Horse racing in the area started in 1870, the gates closed in 1893 when wagering was banned in NJ, and reopened in 1946. The state of New Jersey acquired the track from the Monmouth Park Jockey Club in 1986.
